Tradie Marketing Secret #7: The Australian Paid Ads Stack (Why Boosting Posts Fails)

Executive Summary

Key takeaways: what you'll get from this secret

  • Why Search Ads catch people with a problem right now (burst pipe, tripped power) while social ads interrupt people who were watching footy highlights
  • Why the Boost Post button is the most expensive way to spend a small ad budget
  • The two-part paid ads stack for Australian tradies: Google Search and Maps ads for inbound jobs, plus a small Meta retargeting budget to stay front of mind
  • The truth about Local Services Ads and Google Verified in Australia, and what to use instead today
  • A realistic $600 to $1,200 a month split for a solo or two-van operator, measured on cost per booked job, not clicks

A paid ads stack is the small set of advertising channels a trade business runs together, each doing one clear job. For most Australian tradies, that means one channel that catches people who need you right now, and one that keeps you in front of people who have already found you.

This is Secret #7 in the Tradie Marketing Secrets series. Secrets #1 to #6 were about getting more from customers and partners you already have. This one is about spending money on ads without handing it straight to Meta or Google for nothing.

A few numbers worth knowing:

19% of people click a Google ad during their search, and the share climbs for commercial searches like "emergency plumber near me" 1.

In the United States, home and home improvement Google Ads average $8.33 a click, an 8.05% conversion rate and $90.92 per lead (April 2025 to March 2026 data) 2. Australian costs vary by trade and suburb, but the lesson holds: search leads cost real money, so tracking matters.

Facebook lead campaigns for home improvement average $41.26 per lead in the same benchmark series 3. Cheaper per lead, but those people were not searching for a tradie when they saw your ad.

What Is the Difference Between Search Ads and Social Ads?

One catches demand. The other creates it.

Search ads (Google Search and Google Maps) show up when someone types a problem into Google: "hot water not working", "electrician Castle Hill", "aircon repair near me". They already need a tradie. Your job is to be the first one they can call.

Social ads (Facebook and Instagram) show up while someone is scrolling. They were not looking for a plumber. Your ad has to interrupt them, make them care, and hope they remember you when something breaks.

For a sparky, plumber or air-con tech, the money is almost always in search first. A builder doing $80,000 renos has more room for social, because customers plan for months and look at a lot of photos. Our Google Ads for tradies guide and Facebook Ads for tradies guide go deeper on each channel.

Action: Write down the last 10 jobs you won. How many started with the customer searching Google? That number tells you where most of your ad budget belongs.

Why Is Boosting a Facebook Post a Waste of Money?

Because the Boost button is built to be easy, not to get you jobs.

When you tap Boost Post on Facebook or Instagram, you usually end up paying for likes, reactions and people scrolling past your photo. It feels like marketing. It rarely shows up in your job book. Here is why.

No tracking of what you actually care about

A boosted post reports reach, engagement and link clicks. It does not tell you how many people rang you, sent a quote request, or became a booked job, unless you have set up the Meta Pixel and proper conversion events on your website first. Most tradies who boost have not.

The wrong people see it

Boosting pushes your post to "people who might like your Page" or a broad radius. That includes renters, people 90 minutes away, other tradies, and your mates. Likes from them feel good. None of them need a switchboard upgrade this month.

No phone call capture

Tradie jobs come in by phone. A boosted post has no call button tied to reporting, no call tracking, and no way to tell a boosted-post call from a referral. On Google, calls from ads can be tracked as conversions with a Google forwarding number, including calls that come from your website 4.

What to do instead

Use Meta Ads Manager, not the Boost button, and only for a narrow job: showing ads to people who already visited your website or watched your videos. That is retargeting, and it is covered below.

Action: Check your Facebook ad history for the last 12 months. Add up what you spent on boosts, then ask how many jobs you can trace back to them. Most tradies get a number close to zero.

What Is the Two-Part Paid Ads Stack for Tradies?

Two channels. Two jobs. No overlap.

Part 1: Google Search and Maps ads (catch the job)

This is where most of your budget goes.

  • Search ads for high-intent terms: "blocked drain [suburb]", "emergency electrician", "split system installation". Block junk like DIY, jobs, courses, salary and Bunnings.
  • Maps ads using location assets. When you link your Google Business Profile to Google Ads, your listing can appear on Google Maps "beside, above, or below search results", including in the Maps app 5. That is the "Sponsored" pin at the top of the map.
  • Call tracking on the ad and your website, so every call is counted 4.

We set this up as a done-for-you service on our Sponsored Google Maps Ads page.

What about Local Services Ads and Google Verified?

Not in Australia. Google's own getting-started page lists 11 countries where Local Services Ads are available, including the US, UK, Canada and parts of Western Europe. Australia is not on the list 6. No Local Services Ads also means no Google Verified badge here.

So if someone sells you "Google Guaranteed" placement in Australia today, walk away. Location assets in Google Ads are how you appear in the Sponsored Maps slots right now. The full comparison is in Sponsored Google Business Profile vs Local Services Ads.

Part 2: Meta retargeting (stay front of mind)

This is a small top-up, not the main event.

  • Install the Meta Pixel on your website. It lets you build website custom audiences of people based on what they did on your site 7.
  • Show simple ads to people who visited your site in the last 30 to 90 days and people who watched most of a job video.
  • Ads should be proof, not hype: a before and after, a 20 second job clip, a real review, your licence number and phone.

Retargeting works because most people do not book the first time they find you. A hot water system quote gets discussed over dinner. Your face showing up again two days later, looking tidy and legit, helps you win that conversation.

One warning: retargeting needs traffic. If your website only gets a handful of visitors a month, fix search and Maps first, then add Meta.

Action: Put the Meta Pixel on your website this week, even if you are not running Meta ads yet. It starts building the audience from day one.

How Much Should a Solo or Two-Van Tradie Spend on Ads?

For most solo and two-van trade businesses, $600 to $1,200 a month in ad spend is a sensible starting range. Here is how we would split it.

Monthly ad spend, Google Search and Maps, Meta retargeting, Who it suits
Monthly ad spendGoogle Search and MapsMeta retargetingWho it suits
$600$500$100Solo tradie, one main service area
$900$720$180Solo with a second service or wider area
$1,200$950$250Two vans, or a trade with bigger job values

A few rules:

  • Ad spend is separate from management fees. If an agency runs it, their fee sits on top. Our Maps ads management is listed on the Google Maps ads page, and Google bills your ad spend to your own card.
  • Give it 60 to 90 days. The first few weeks are about finding which searches and suburbs bring real jobs and which ones to block.
  • Only scale what works. If Google is bringing booked jobs at a cost you are happy with, move more money there. Do not spread thin across five platforms.
  • Pause when you are booked out. There is no point paying for calls you cannot take.

Action: Pick a starting number you can hold for three months without stressing. Consistency beats a big first month followed by nothing.

How Do You Measure Ads by Cost per Booked Job?

Clicks do not pay the mortgage. Jobs do.

Cost per booked job is your total ad spend for the month divided by the number of jobs you actually booked from those ads. It is the only number that tells you whether ads are making you money.

An example month:

  • $900 spent on ads
  • 34 calls and forms from ads
  • 14 quotes sent
  • 6 jobs booked

That works out to $150 in ad spend for each booked job. If your average job is worth $1,100 with a healthy margin, that is a good month. If your average job is a $180 tap washer, it is not.

To track it without fancy software:

  1. Count calls and forms from ads using Google Ads call tracking and conversion reports 4.
  2. Ask every new customer "How did you find us?" and write it in your job system.
  3. Once a month, add up ad spend, jobs booked from ads, and total invoiced from those jobs.

Ignore reach, impressions, likes and click-through rate when deciding whether to keep spending. They are useful for tuning ads, not for judging them.

Action: Add a "lead source" field to your quoting or job app today. Without it, you are guessing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is boosting a Facebook post worth it for tradies?

Usually not. Boosted posts mostly buy likes and reach from people who are not looking for a tradie, and they do not track calls or booked jobs unless your website tracking is already set up. Put the money into Google Search and Maps ads first, then use Meta Ads Manager for retargeting.

Should tradies use Google Ads or Facebook Ads?

For emergency and ready-to-book work, Google first, because people are actively searching for your trade. Facebook and Instagram work best as a smaller retargeting budget, or for trades with long decision times and big visual jobs, such as builders and landscapers.

Are Google Local Services Ads available in Australia?

No. Google's Local Services Ads help page lists 11 countries, including the US, UK and Canada, and Australia is not one of them. To appear in the Sponsored slots on Google Maps today, use location assets in a normal Google Ads campaign.

How much should a tradie spend on Google Ads per month?

Most solo and two-van tradies can start with $600 to $1,200 a month in total ad spend, with around 80% on Google Search and Maps and the rest on Meta retargeting. Management fees are extra. Hold the budget for 60 to 90 days before judging results.

What is retargeting and does it work for tradies?

Retargeting shows ads to people who already visited your website or watched your videos, using the Meta Pixel. It works well for jobs people think about before booking, like hot water replacements or switchboard upgrades. It needs a steady flow of website visitors to be worth running.

What is cost per booked job?

It is your total ad spend divided by the number of jobs you booked from those ads. For example, $900 in ads that produced 6 booked jobs is $150 per booked job. It is a better measure than clicks or leads because it ties ad spend to real work.

Can I run Google Maps ads without a Google Business Profile?

No. Maps ads use location assets, which pull your address, phone, hours and photos from a Google Business Profile linked to your Google Ads account. Get the profile verified and accurate before you spend on ads.
