Sponsored Google Business Profile vs Local Services Ads: What Actually Works in Australia

Executive Summary
Key takeaways: what you'll get from this guide
- Why you cannot buy Local Services Ads or a Google Verified badge in Australia right now, straight from Google's own country list
- The paid Maps placement that does work today: Sponsored Google Business Profile ads, run through location assets in Google Ads
- A side-by-side of pay-per-click on Maps vs pay-per-lead on LSA, including setup effort and the paperwork each one needs
- What Made 4 Tradies charges for each, and why the LSA option is a free waitlist until Google switches Australia on
- How to spot an agency selling you something Google has not launched here
Sponsored Google Business Profile ads are Google Ads that pull your business name, star rating, address and call button from your Google Business Profile, then show that listing with a "Sponsored" label at the top of Google Maps and the local map pack. Local Services Ads (LSA) are a separate Google product where you pay per lead instead of per click, and your listing carries a Google Verified badge.
Both sound like the same thing to a busy plumber or sparky. They are not, and for Australian tradies the biggest difference is simple: one of them exists here today and the other one does not.
If someone has rung you promising "Google Guaranteed" placement in Sydney or Newcastle this year, read this before you sign anything.
A few numbers worth knowing:
42% of people doing a local search click on the Google map pack, which is exactly where Sponsored Google Business Profile ads sit 1.
Local Services Ads are listed as available in 11 countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and much of Western Europe. Australia is not one of them 2.
There is no way to pay Google for a better organic local ranking. Google says so in plain words, which is why paid Maps placement is a separate ad product and not a shortcut into the free 3-pack 3.
Are Google Local Services Ads Available in Australia?
No. Not as of September 2026.
Google's own "Getting started with Local Services Ads" help page lists the countries where you can sign up. It covers the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, Belgium and Switzerland. Australia is not on it 2.
That also means the badge is off the table. In 2025 Google rolled its old Google Guaranteed and Google Screened badges into a single Google Verified badge, and dropped the money-back guarantee that came with Google Guaranteed 4. That badge only appears on Local Services Ads. No Local Services Ads in Australia, no badge in Australia.
Google is also mid-way through moving Local Services Ads into Google Ads as a Performance Max campaign with pay-per-lead goals. US home service trades moved first in August 2026, and non-US accounts are scheduled for 2027 5. Nobody outside Google knows when Australia will be switched on, so treat any date you hear as a guess.
Action: If an agency says they can get you "Google Guaranteed" or "Google Verified" in Australia today, ask them to show you the live account and the badge on a real Australian listing. You will not get one.
What Actually Works on Google Maps in Australia Today?
Sponsored Google Business Profile ads. Some people call them Maps ads or local search ads. Same idea.
Here is how it works. You link your Google Business Profile to a Google Ads account and turn on location assets. Google then pulls your address, phone number, hours and photos from the profile into your ads. Google's help page says your locations "can appear beside, above, or below search results on Google Maps, including the Maps app" 6.
For a tradie, that looks like your listing sitting at the top of the map results with a Sponsored label, your star rating showing, and a tap-to-call button right there. When someone searches "emergency plumber Gosford" on their phone, you are the first card they see.
Two things this is not:
- It is not a ranking boost. Your organic spot in the free 3-pack still depends on relevance, distance and prominence 3. The ad sits on top of that, it does not change it.
- It is not LSA with a different name. There is no Verified badge and no pay-per-lead billing. You pay per click, like any other Google Ad.
This is what our Sponsored Google Maps Ads service sets up and runs for Australian tradies.
Action: Search your main trade and suburb on Google Maps from your phone. If you see Sponsored listings above the map pack, your competitors are already doing this.
How Do Sponsored Maps Ads and Local Services Ads Compare?
| Sponsored Google Business Profile ads | Local Services Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Available in Australia? | Yes, today | No, not yet |
| How you pay | Per click (calls, directions, website visits from the ad) | Per lead (calls and messages from the ad) |
| Trust badge | Sponsored label plus your real star rating | Google Verified badge |
| What you need first | A verified Google Business Profile and a Google Ads account | A verified Google Business Profile plus Google's screening and verification checks |
| Setup effort | Moderate: campaign, location assets, service radius, negative keywords, call tracking | Heavier: business checks, licence and insurance paperwork, job types, service areas |
| Who controls wasted spend | You (or your manager), through keywords, suburbs and schedule | Mostly Google, with a lead dispute and credit process |
| Where it shows | Google Maps and the local results on Search | Top of Google Search and Maps |
Cost per click vs cost per lead
With Sponsored Maps ads you pay when someone clicks. That might be a call, a tap for directions, or a visit to your website. Some of those clicks turn into jobs and some do not, so the quality of your targeting decides how much you waste.
With Local Services Ads, Google charges "for each valid lead you receive" through the ad, and leads include calls, messages and booking requests 7. You can report a bad lead, but Google notes that lead credits are not offered in every region or category, so the "only pay for good leads" pitch has fine print 7.
Pay-per-lead sounds safer on paper. In practice, both models live or die on the same things: answering the phone, a tight service area, and only showing up for jobs you actually want.
Setup and verification
Sponsored Maps ads need a clean, verified Google Business Profile and a properly built Google Ads campaign. The hard part is not the paperwork, it is the targeting: which suburbs, which search terms, and which ones to block (DIY, jobs, courses, apprenticeships).
Local Services Ads add a screening layer on top. New advertisers have to pass Google's screening and verification process before the Google Verified badge appears 4. For Australian trades that will almost certainly mean your trade licence, ABN and public liability Certificate of Currency ready to upload when it launches.
Action: Whichever way you go, get your Google Business Profile verified, accurate and full of recent reviews first. Both ad types pull straight from it, so a messy profile makes every dollar of ad spend work harder for less. Our Google Business Profile optimisation service fixes that before any money goes to Google.
What Does Made 4 Tradies Charge for Each?
We keep the two separate, because one is a live service and the other is a waitlist.
Sponsored Google Maps Ads (live now)
- $697 setup (one-off, ex GST): Google Ads account and access, location asset link to your verified profile, service radius of roughly 10 to 15km, a negative keyword pack to cut DIY and job-seeker clicks, and call and conversion tracking.
- $297 a month management (ex GST): weekly search term reviews, suburb bid adjustments, budget and schedule changes, and a monthly cost-per-call report. No lock-in contract.
- Ad spend is separate. You pay Google directly on your own card, and you own the account.
If your profile needs work first, there is a $1,097 bundle that combines Google Business Profile optimisation with the Maps ads setup. Full details are on the Google Maps ads page.
Local Services Ads (free waitlist)
- $0 to join our Local Services Ads early access waitlist. No setup fee and no retainer while Google has not launched in Australia.
- We check your screening readiness (licence, ABN, insurance) and your Google Business Profile now, so you can move quickly when it opens.
- When Google does launch here, setup and management follow the same fixed pricing model, with Google billing your lead fees directly.
We will not take money for an LSA setup Google cannot deliver in your postcode.
Action: If you want calls from Maps this month, Sponsored Maps ads are the option. If you want the Verified badge down the track, join the waitlist as well. The two are not either-or.
Which One Should an Australian Tradie Choose Right Now?
For most tradies in 2026, the answer is Sponsored Maps ads now, LSA waitlist on the side.
Sponsored Maps ads make sense if:
- You already have a verified Google Business Profile with decent reviews
- You can answer the phone, or have someone who can, during the hours the ads run
- You have budget for Google clicks on top of the management fee
- You do emergency or high-value work where one extra job a week pays for the month
Hold off on paid ads, and fix the basics first, if:
- Your Google Business Profile is not verified, is suspended, or has duplicates
- You have a handful of reviews, or none from the last six months
- You are already booked out for weeks and cannot take on more work

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get Google Local Services Ads in Australia?
Not yet. Google's Local Services Ads help centre lists 11 countries where the product is available, and Australia is not one of them. You can join a waitlist so you are ready when Google launches here.
Can I buy the Google Guaranteed or Google Verified badge in Australia?
No. Google Guaranteed was replaced by the Google Verified badge in 2025, and that badge only appears on Local Services Ads. Since Local Services Ads have not launched in Australia, there is no way to get the badge here yet, whatever an agency tells you.
What is a Sponsored Google Business Profile ad?
It is a Google Ad linked to your Google Business Profile through location assets. Your listing, star rating and call button can appear at the top of Google Maps with a Sponsored label when people nearby search for your trade.
Do Sponsored Google Maps ads charge per click or per lead?
Per click. You pay when someone interacts with the ad, such as calling, getting directions or visiting your website. Local Services Ads charge per lead instead, but they are not available in Australia yet.
Do I need a Google Business Profile for either type of ad?
Yes. Both Sponsored Maps ads and Local Services Ads pull your details and reviews from a verified Google Business Profile. If your profile is unverified, suspended or out of date, fix that first.
Does running Maps ads improve my free Google Maps ranking?
No. Google says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. The ad sits above the free results. Your organic position still comes down to relevance, distance and prominence.
How much does Made 4 Tradies charge for Sponsored Maps ads?
$697 one-off setup and $297 a month management, both ex GST, with no lock-in contract. Your ad spend is paid straight to Google on your own card. Joining the Local Services Ads waitlist is free.
