The Bing Places Guide for Tradies (and Why It Powers AI Search)

By Richard Kelsey9 min read

Executive Summary

Key takeaways, what you'll get from this guide

  • Why 61.08% of Australian desktops still run Windows, and what that means for who is searching for a tradie on a work PC
  • The two-minute setup: Bing's "Import from Google" feature that copies your verified Google Business Profile straight across, no retyping
  • Why Bing's search index is quietly become the infrastructure several AI assistants use to decide what to say, not just what to show
  • The one thing Bing does that neither Google nor Apple does properly: letting a service area business choose whether to hide its address
  • The category mismatch trap almost nobody checks after an import
  • A straight comparison table of Google, Apple and Bing so you know where to spend the next hour

You have almost certainly sorted your Google Business Profile. If you read our Apple Maps guide for Australian tradies, you might have claimed that too. Bing is the one nearly everyone skips, and that is exactly why it is worth ten minutes of your time.

Bing Places for Business is Microsoft's free local business listing, the equivalent of Google Business Profile for the Bing search engine, Microsoft Edge, and Windows itself. It shows your name, phone number, hours, and location on Bing Maps and in Bing search results.

The old joke about Bing is that nobody searches on it by choice. That joke is a decade out of date. Bing is not winning on people typing bing.com into a browser. It is winning because it is bolted onto the operating system Australia runs on, and because it has quietly become the data layer several AI assistants read from before they answer a question.

If you have not done the other two yet, start with our Google Business Profile guide for Australian tradies, then the Apple Maps guide. This one completes the set.

Why Bing Places Matters in 2026

Two separate forces are pushing Bing back into relevance for tradies, and neither one depends on anybody actually preferring Bing's search results.

Windows and Edge dominance

Windows held 61.08% of the desktop operating system market in Australia in August 2026 1. Every one of those machines ships with Microsoft Edge as the default browser and Bing wired in as the fallback search engine for the address bar, Cortana-style voice queries, and the "Search" box in the Windows taskbar.

That matters more for a tradie than it first looks. Bing's own desktop search share in Australia sits at 16.51% 2, a real slice of searches, and it skews toward exactly the moment a property manager, a builder's site supervisor, or an office admin looks up a subcontractor during business hours on a work PC. A homeowner on their phone at 9pm is almost always on Google or Apple Maps. A commercial client sourcing a supplier from a desktop at 11am on a Tuesday has a meaningfully higher chance of hitting Bing first.

The AI search driver

This is the part that changes the calculation entirely. Microsoft's own Bing team drew a hard line in May 2026 between two different jobs an index can do: "Search indexing was built to help humans decide what to read. Grounding indexing is being built to help AI systems decide what to say" 3.

In plain terms: Bing's index is not just a list of web pages any more. It is the data several AI assistants query in real time to answer a question, including Microsoft's own Copilot, which is built directly on top of Bing's search and grounding infrastructure. When someone asks an AI assistant "who's a good plumber near me" and that assistant reaches for a live, current answer instead of guessing from training data, there is a real chance it is reaching into Bing's index to get it.

An unclaimed or outdated Bing listing does not just mean a slightly worse Bing Maps pin. It means the AI layer that is increasingly standing between your business and the customer is working from whatever scraps it can find, or nothing at all.

The 2-Minute Setup: Import From Google

This is the reason Bing Places is worth doing even though almost nobody has heard of it. You do not build the listing from scratch.

Bing Places has a direct "Import from Google" option that pulls your name, address, phone number, hours, categories, and photos straight from your existing Google Business Profile 45. If your Google listing is already verified, Bing verifies the imported listing instantly, no waiting on a phone call, an email, or a postcard 4.

You can also opt in to ongoing sync, so a change you make to your Google Business Profile later, a new phone number, updated hours over Christmas, flows through to Bing on the next sync rather than needing to be typed twice forever 4. Treat that sync as a convenience, not a guarantee. Check back on the Bing side after any major update to your Google listing rather than assuming it has definitely carried across.

Action: If you have already claimed and verified your Google Business Profile, following the Google Business Profile guide for Australian tradies first, go to bingplaces.com, sign in, and choose the Google import option. Ten minutes, most of it spent checking the fields it filled in for you.

The Service Area Business Difference

Read our Apple Maps guide and you will know Apple has no way for a mobile tradie to hide a residential address. Read our Google guide and you will know Google forces the opposite: a service area business must hide its address to be set up correctly.

Bing sits between the two, and gives you the actual choice.

Bing Places lets a service area business hide its physical address from public search results once the listing is set up with a complete street address and a selected category, and instead show only your city and postcode publicly 6. Unlike Google, hiding the address is optional rather than mandatory. Unlike Apple, it is available at all.

For most home-based tradies, hiding the address is still the right call for the same reasons it is on Google: proximity is doing the ranking work regardless of what is publicly displayed, and there is no upside to a customer being able to see exactly which house you live in.

Action: In Bing Places, open your listing, go to the additional business details section, and select the option to hide your address, provided your service areas are already filled in.

How Do I Set Up a Bing Places Listing for a Trade Business?

Time required: 10-20 minutes if importing, 30-45 minutes from scratch | Difficulty: Easy

Step 1: Check if you already have a Google Business Profile

The import path only works if you have one. If you do not, do that first with our Google Business Profile guide, then come back here. It is genuinely the fastest route into Bing.

Step 2: Sign in and import, or add manually

Go to bingplaces.com and sign in with a Microsoft account. Choose Import from Google and authorise the connection, or select Add a new business if you would rather build it manually.

Step 3: Check every imported field, especially the category

Bing's category list is its own taxonomy, not a mirror of Google's. A category that mapped cleanly during import can land on the closest available match rather than an exact one, and Bing allows up to ten categories per listing so there is room to be specific 7. Go through them and correct anything that reads generic ("Contractor" instead of "Electrician", say).

Step 4: Decide on address visibility

If you are a service area business, follow the address-hiding steps above once your service areas are entered and your category is set.

Step 5: Verify

If your Google Business Profile is already verified, the import verifies instantly. If you are building manually, Bing verifies by phone call, email, or postcard to your business address 4. Phone and email are both faster than waiting on the post.

Step 6: Add photos and complete the profile

Upload your logo, a cover photo, and real job photos. A thin, half-filled Bing listing does the same job as an unclaimed one: it gives an AI assistant or a Bing searcher nothing solid to work with.

Read it as an order of operations, not a competition. Google first, because that is where the volume is. Apple second, because two out of three Australian mobiles are iPhones and it is genuinely easy once you accept the address trap. Bing third, because the ten-minute import makes it close to free effort for a real slice of desktop and AI-assistant visibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bing Places for Business free?

Yes, entirely. Claiming, verifying and managing a Bing Places listing costs nothing, the same as Google Business Profile and Apple Business.

Do I really need Bing Places if almost nobody searches on Bing?

You need it for two reasons that have nothing to do with someone typing bing.com into a browser. Windows ships Bing as its default search fallback, so a real slice of desktop searches during business hours land there anyway. More importantly, Bing's index increasingly feeds the answers AI assistants give when someone asks them to find a tradie, so an unclaimed listing can mean an AI assistant has nothing current to work from.

How long does Bing Places verification take?

If your Google Business Profile is already verified and you use the Import from Google option, verification is instant. Building a listing from scratch and verifying by phone or email typically takes minutes to a day. Postcard verification, the slowest option, can take one to two weeks.

Can I hide my home address on Bing Places like I can on Google?

Yes, and unlike Google it is optional rather than mandatory. Once your service areas are entered and a category is selected, you can choose to hide your street address and show only your city and postcode publicly. This is different from Apple Business, which has no address-hiding option at all.

Why does my imported category look wrong on Bing?

Bing runs its own category taxonomy rather than mirroring Google's exactly. An import maps your Google category to the closest match Bing has, which is not always an exact one. Check your categories after any import and correct them manually, you can list up to ten.

Does Bing Places affect my Google rankings?

No, they are separate systems with no direct ranking interaction. Bing Places affects your visibility on Bing, Edge and Windows search, and increasingly on AI assistants that draw on Bing's index. Your Google Business Profile is what drives your Google Maps and Google Search visibility, and the two should be kept consistent in name, address and phone number rather than treated as competitors.

Should I bother with Bing Places if I have already done Google and Apple?

Yes, because the marginal cost is close to zero. If your Google Business Profile is verified, the import takes about ten minutes and mostly involves checking fields Bing already filled in. Given the size of the desktop Windows install base and Bing's growing role feeding AI assistants, ten minutes for that reach is one of the better time trades on this list.
