Executive Summary

What you'll get from this list

  • 18 free business listing sites you can join at no cost, grouped so you can knock them over in one sitting
  • The three that actually matter first, and the ten-minute ones you do once and forget
  • Which "listings" are genuinely free, and which (like an ASIC business name, or a White Pages business entry) quietly cost money
  • The government registers that build more trust than any directory, and how to keep them correct
  • Where paid lead platforms fit, and why they are deliberately left off this list

Every tradie knows about Google. Far fewer know there are dozens of other places you can list your business for nothing, and that some of the most trusted ones are run by the government, not a marketing company.

A free business listing site is an online directory, from Google Business Profile to the government's own ABN Lookup register, where an Australian tradie can add their business name, phone number, trade category and service area at no cost, so customers can find you and Google gets another signal your business is real.

This is the free-only list. We have deliberately left the paid lead platforms (hipages, ServiceSeeking, Airtasker) off it, because paying for leads is a different decision with a different cost. If you just want the free foundation done properly, our free Google listing audit shows you where you already turn up and where you are missing. If you are weighing up paid leads, we cover that in is hipages worth it for tradies and the free-vs-paid directory breakdown.

A few numbers worth knowing.

Just over half of Australian businesses, 51%, used social media for their online presence in 2024-25, up from 47% in 2021-22 1. Your customers are spread across platforms, so one listing on one site is never the whole job.

Before they pay anyone, plenty of Australians now check that a business is genuine. The ACCC tells consumers to look a business up on the ASIC business names register and the Australian Business Register's ABN Lookup, and to check licensing and industry-association membership, before they hand over money 2. Every one of those is a free listing you can make sure says the right thing.

ABN Lookup itself is free and needs no login: anyone can see your ABN status, entity type, GST registration and past trading names straight from the Australian Business Register 3. That makes it one of the most trusted entries you have, and you do not even create it, you just keep it correct.

What Counts as a Free Business Listing Site?

Three different things get lumped together under "listing", and only two of them belong on a free list.

  • Free directories. Google Business Profile, Yellow Pages, True Local and the rest. You add your details, customers find you, it costs nothing but your time.
  • Government registers. ABN Lookup and your state trade-licence register. These are not marketing tools, they are proof your business is real and licensed. Free to appear in, and worth more trust than any directory.
  • Paid things dressed up as listings. Registering a business name with ASIC is not free, it is a paid registration, and the name then appears on ASIC's public register 4. A White Pages business listing is a sales product too: Thryv's free listing offer covers Yellow Pages, and White Pages business listings are quoted over the phone 6, which is why White Pages is not on this list. Paid lead platforms like hipages are not listings at all, they sell you the lead.

This guide covers the first two. For the paid side, start with is hipages worth it for tradies. We are not going to re-explain how citations and NAP consistency feed your Google rankings here either, that ground is already covered in top Aussie directories for tradies. The short version: same business name, same number, same spelling, on every single one.

Action: Open a note on your phone with your business name, phone number, ABN, licence number and service suburbs, exactly as you want them to appear. Copy and paste from that note into every listing below so they all match.

Which Free Search and Maps Listings Come First?

These three are where most searches actually happen. Do them before anything else on this page.

Google Business Profile

Visit Google Business Profile →

The single most important listing you have. When someone searches "electrician near me" or "plumber Gosford", your Google Business Profile decides whether you appear in the map results at the top. If you do only one thing off this list, do this one. Full walkthrough: the Google Business Profile guide for Australian tradies.

Apple Business Connect (Apple Maps)

Visit Apple Business Connect →

Apple Maps is the default on every iPhone in the country. When an iOS user asks Siri for a nearby sparky or plumber, this is what answers. Apple held 59.49% of the Australian mobile vendor market in June 2026 7, so an unclaimed listing here leaves a lot of jobs on the table.

Bing Places for Business

Visit Bing Places →

Bing still powers Microsoft Edge, Windows search and a slab of desktop searches, and it feeds several AI search tools. The fastest way in is to import straight from your Google Business Profile, which fills everything in for you in a few minutes.

Action: Claim all three. On Bing, choose "Import from Google" so you are not typing your details a third time.

Which Phone-Book and Review Directories Still Pull Their Weight?

Older homeowners still trust the phone-book names, and review sites do a lot of quiet convincing before anyone calls. All free to list on.

Yellow Pages Australia

Visit Yellow Pages →

Now a proper online directory, not just the old book, and the one Thryv-owned site where you can still ask for a free listing. Two things to know before you start: the free listing is at Thryv's discretion and subject to their advertising rules, and you can only request one per business and address 6. It gets you your details, phone number and a link to your website.

True Local

Visit True Local →

A long-running Australian directory that now sits in the same Thryv stable as Yellow Pages, and its "get a free listing" link runs through the same signup. The listing takes your details, categories, a description and photos, and lets customers leave public reviews. Add three job photos while you are in there.

Word of Mouth

Visit Word of Mouth →

The old WOMO, now at wordofmouth.com.au. Built for Australian service businesses, and tradies feature heavily. If your business is already on there, claim it through the "is this your business" link so you can reply to reviews and get alerted when a new one lands. Reviews here tend to run long, so a handful of thorough ones can do more convincing than a wall of generic star ratings elsewhere.

Yelp Australia

Visit Yelp for Business →

Much bigger in the US, but it runs Australian city pages and it is popular with younger homeowners who trust peer reviews. Worth ten minutes, not an afternoon. You may read elsewhere that a Yelp profile feeds your ratings into Apple Maps: Apple has been rolling out its own thumbs-up ratings and phasing third-party ones down, so do not claim Yelp expecting it to fix your Apple Maps entry. Claim Apple Business Connect for that.

ProductReview.com.au

Visit ProductReview.com.au →

A name Australians recognise when they are checking whether a business is any good, and it carries serious volume in the trades: the Home Builders category alone holds over 100,000 reviews. Claim your listing so you can respond to reviews rather than leaving them to sit there unanswered.

Action: Claim these five, then make it a habit to ask one happy customer per week to leave a review on whichever one they use, not only Google.

Which General Citation Directories Are Worth Ten Minutes Each?

These are the do-once-and-forget listings. Nobody browses them for fun, but each one is a free, consistent mention of your business that backs up everything else.

Localsearch

Visit Localsearch →

An Australian directory that says plainly on its own site that "a basic Localsearch listing is free" 8, with paid tiers above it for featured placement. The free one covers your details, photos and reviews, and that is all you need. Ignore the upsell.

Hotfrog Australia

Visit Hotfrog →

Nobody visits Hotfrog to find a plumber, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. It is here because it is a free, permanent, consistent mention of your name, number and suburbs, which is the whole job of a citation. Fill out every field, trade categories, service area and website included. Under ten minutes.

Cylex Australia

Visit Cylex Australia →

A free international directory with an Australian section. Register your business, then add your name, categories, service area and a short description. Another quick, consistent citation to tick off in the same sitting.

Brownbook

Visit Brownbook →

A free global listing database. It is not a source of direct enquiries so much as another spot that confirms your name, number and address line up with everywhere else. Create it, verify it, move on.

One we took off this list. StartLocal used to turn up on every "free Australian directory" roundup. When we checked it in July 2026 there was no "add your business" link anywhere on the site, its most recent reviews were from 2020, and it was still running a Google Analytics tag that Google switched off in 2023. If a list you are reading still recommends it, that list has not been checked.

Action: Do all four in one sitting, straight off the note you made earlier. Do not agonise over the descriptions, just keep the name, number and suburbs identical to your Google listing.

Do Government Registers Count as a Free Business Listing?

Yes, and they carry more trust than any directory, because a homeowner checking one of these is checking whether you are real and licensed. You do not market on them, you keep them correct.

ABN Lookup (Australian Business Register)

Visit ABN Lookup →

Free, public, no login. Anyone can see your ABN status, entity type, GST registration and past trading names 3. Search your own ABN and check it says what you expect. If your trading name is not showing, or your GST status is wrong, fix it, because customers and other tradies do look you up here.

Your State Trade-Licence Register

Every state and territory runs a public register where a homeowner can check a tradesperson's licence, and consumer-protection bodies tell them to do exactly that before hiring, alongside checking industry-body membership and getting written quotes 5. Your licence appearing correctly on the register is a free trust signal you already have. Make sure your business name on the licence matches the name you trade and advertise under, so the two line up when someone checks.

ASIC Business Names Register

Visit ASIC business names →

If you trade under anything other than your own name or your company name, you must register that business name with ASIC, and once you do it appears on ASIC's public register 4. Worth being clear: registering the name is a paid step, not free. The free part is the public register entry it creates, which is another place customers can confirm you are genuine.

Action: Look up your own ABN and business name today. These are the entries a careful customer checks before they call, so they are the ones worth being right.

Should You List in Your Trade Association's Directory?

If you are a member of your trade's association, most of them publish a "find a member" directory that customers actually use, and consumer-protection advice points homeowners toward association membership as a mark of a genuine tradie 5. If you are already paying the membership, using the directory is free.

Master Electricians Australia

Visit Find a Master Electrician →

Members get listed in the public "find a Master Electrician" search, which homeowners use to find a vetted sparky. If you hold the membership, make sure your listing is complete and your service area is right.

Master Plumbers

Visit Master Plumbers →

Master Plumbers runs as state-based associations, and consumer-protection bodies name it directly as one to check for 5. If you are a member of your state's Master Plumbers association, get yourself into their find-a-plumber directory and keep the details matching your other listings.

Master Builders

Visit Master Builders Australia →

Same shape as Master Plumbers: a national body over state associations, and it is the state one that runs the public directory. Master Builders NSW, for instance, has a Find a Master Builder search. If you are a member, check your state association's directory has you in it with the right trade and postcode.

A word on the Housing Industry Association, which most "free listing" roundups include here. HIA membership is a genuine trust mark for residential builders, but when we looked in July 2026 we could not find a public find-a-member search a homeowner could use, so we have not counted it as a listing. Join HIA for the contracts, training and advocacy, not for a directory entry we cannot confirm exists.

Action: List only where you genuinely hold membership. A claimed association listing you are not actually a member of is worse than none.

How Many Free Listings Do Australian Tradies Actually Need?

You do not need all eighteen on day one, and you certainly do not need to pay anyone to submit you to hundreds of directories. Work in this order:

  1. The big three: Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Bing Places. This is where the searches are.
  2. The government registers: check your ABN Lookup and licence-register entries are correct. Free trust, already yours.
  3. The review and phone-book names: Yellow Pages, True Local, Word of Mouth, Yelp, ProductReview. An afternoon's work.
  4. The citation directories: Localsearch, Hotfrog, Cylex, Brownbook. One sitting, done and forgotten.
  5. Your trade association, if you are a member.

The one rule across all of them is consistency: the same business name, number and service suburbs everywhere. A listing with your old mobile or a slightly different name works against you. For the detail on why that consistency matters for your Google rankings, see top Aussie directories for tradies.

All of these listings point back to one thing: your website. That is the asset you own, and the one every free listing is quietly sending Google to. If you do not have one yet, that is the gap worth closing first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best free business listing site for tradies in Australia?

Google Business Profile, by a distance. It is the listing that decides whether you appear in the map results when someone searches for your trade nearby. After that, Apple Maps and Bing Places cover the rest of the search traffic, and the government registers (ABN Lookup, your licence register) add trust. Everything else on this list backs those up.

Is Google Business Profile free?

Yes, completely. Creating and managing a Google Business Profile costs nothing. You only pay if you choose to run Google Ads on top of it, which is a separate thing. The listing itself, including photos, posts and replying to reviews, is free.

Is ABN Lookup a business listing?

In effect, yes. ABN Lookup is the Australian Business Register's free public search, and anyone can see your ABN status, entity type, GST registration and past trading names with no login. It is not a marketing directory, it is a trust signal, and it is one of the first places a careful customer checks that a business is genuine.

Does registering a business name give me a free listing?

No. Registering a business name with ASIC is a paid registration, not a free listing. Once registered, the name does appear on ASIC's public register, which is a free public entry customers can search, but the registration step itself costs money. Do not confuse the two.

How many directories should a tradie be listed on?

Get the big three (Google, Apple, Bing) plus your government registers sorted first, then work through the review and citation directories over an afternoon. Around 10 to 15 solid, consistent listings covers the ground for most tradies. Chasing hundreds of obscure directories adds little, and paying a service to blast you across them is rarely worth it.

Are trade-association directories worth joining just for the listing?

Join the association for the membership, licensing and support, not only the directory. If you are already a member of a body like Master Electricians Australia, your state Master Plumbers association or your state Master Builders association, then absolutely use the member directory that comes with it, because homeowners are told to check for that membership. Paying membership purely for a directory listing usually is not worth it on its own.

What is the difference between a free listing and a paid lead platform?

A free listing (Google, Yellow Pages, a government register) simply makes your business findable and costs nothing. A paid lead platform like hipages sells you the lead itself, and shares it with several other tradies at once. Free listings build an asset over time, paid platforms rent you work while you keep paying. We cover the paid side in is hipages worth it for tradies.
