Executive Summary

Key takeaways: what you'll get from this guide

  • Google discontinued the Business Profile Q&A section. The API was switched off on 3 November 2025 and the public section was removed through early 2026
  • The advice you will still find on most blogs, which is to seed your own questions and upvote your own answers, describes a feature that no longer exists
  • Google replaced it with Ask Maps, an AI system that writes its own answers from your profile, your reviews, and your website
  • Ask Maps has only launched in the United States and India. Australian tradies have lost Q&A and have not yet been given the replacement
  • What to do in the meantime: move those answers onto your own website, where you still control them and where Google's AI can still read them

If you have gone looking for the Questions & Answers section on your Google Business Profile lately and could not find it, you are not going mad. It has gone.

Google discontinued the feature. The developer API that powered it was switched off on 3 November 2025, and Google's own change log records it plainly: "The My Business Q&A API was discontinued on November 3, 2025. You can no longer read or post questions and answers using the API." 1 The public section on listings was phased out from December 2025 through early 2026.

This one went out quietly. There was no big announcement, which is why a great deal of local SEO advice still tells tradies to seed their own questions, answer them, and upvote their own replies. That advice described a real and genuinely useful tactic for about eight years. It is now impossible. If you read a guide telling you to do it, check the date on it.

A few numbers worth knowing:

97% of consumers read online reviews for local businesses when deciding who to hire 3.

41% of consumers now say they always read reviews when browsing for a business, up from 29% the year before 3.

Over 300 million places feed the information Google's AI now draws on when it answers a customer's question about a local business 4.

What Actually Happened to Google Business Profile Q&A?

The Q&A section was a crowdsourced board on your listing. Anyone could ask a question about your business, and anyone with a Google account could answer it, including people who had never used you. Google displayed whichever answer collected the most upvotes.

That last part is why it is gone. The format let strangers speak for businesses they knew nothing about. Outdated prices, wrong service areas, guesses about opening hours, and the occasional grudge reply all sat on listings as though the owner had written them.

For a tradie the practical upside was that you could get in first. Post the six questions customers always ask, answer them properly, and your profile did some of the phone-answering for you. That worked well. It is worth being clear that it is over rather than pretending otherwise.

Action: Open your business on Google Maps on your phone and scroll the profile. If a Q&A block is still showing, it is legacy content still working its way out. Read the section below before you do anything with it.

What Replaced It, and Can Australian Tradies Use It Yet?

Google replaced Q&A with Ask Maps, a conversational feature powered by its Gemini models. Instead of showing answers that people typed in, it generates an answer on the spot by reading your profile, your reviews, your photos, and your website 2.

From a customer's side it is a box on the listing where they can ask anything, in their own words, and get a written answer immediately.

Here is the part that matters for anyone reading this in Australia. Ask Maps launched in the United States and India only. It rolled out in March 2026 on Android and iOS in those two countries 2, and Google has not announced a date for Australia or New Zealand.

So the honest picture for an Australian trade business right now is a gap. The Q&A section that used to answer questions for you has been taken away, and the AI feature meant to replace it has not arrived. Nothing on your listing is currently doing that job.

That gap will close, and it will close without warning, the same way the removal happened. What you do between now and then decides what Ask Maps says about you on the day it does land.

Action: If your profile still shows old Q&A content, copy the text into a note now. Some of those answers are worth reusing, and the section will disappear without asking you first.

Where Your Answers Should Live Now

The reason seeding Q&A worked was never the Q&A box itself. It was that a customer with a question got an answer instead of dialling the next tradie on the list. That job still needs doing. It has just moved.

Put the six questions on your own website

These are the questions that decide whether someone calls you. They belong on a proper FAQ page or worked into your service pages:

  1. Do you offer emergency after-hours call-outs? State your exact hours, whether you cover weekends, and how to reach you in an emergency.
  2. Which suburbs and areas do you service? List your main regions, for example Sydney Inner West, Parramatta, and the Hills District.
  3. Do you charge a call-out fee? Be straight about it. If a diagnosis fee comes off the final invoice, say so.
  4. Are you fully licensed and insured? Give your licence type, your state, and your public liability cover.
  5. How soon can you come out? An honest current turnaround for non-urgent bookings.
  6. Do you provide free written quotes? Explain whether that means an onsite inspection or a fixed-price estimate.

Written on your own site, these do more than the Q&A box ever did. They can be indexed, they can be cited by AI Overviews, they can carry proper FAQ schema, and nobody can upvote a stranger's version over the top of yours.

Fill in the profile fields the AI actually reads

Ask Maps builds answers out of whatever your profile gives it. A thin profile produces vague answers, or wrong ones. Our Australian tradies Google Business Profile guide covers the full setup, but these are the fields that feed the AI:

  • Every service, named the way customers say it rather than the way the trade says it
  • Your full business description, including your licence number
  • Service areas, set as suburbs rather than a radius
  • Attributes, opening hours, and public holiday adjustments
  • Recent photos of real jobs

Keep the reviews coming

Reviews were always the strongest signal on a listing. Now they are also raw material: an AI answering a question about your reliability is reading your reviews to do it. Every review you collect is another sentence Google can quote about you.

Action: Pick the three questions your customers ask most, and get proper answers for them onto your website this week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why has the Q&A section disappeared from my Google Business Profile?

Google discontinued it. The Q&A API was switched off on 3 November 2025 and the public section was removed from listings through early 2026. It is not a fault with your profile and there is no setting to turn it back on.

Can I still add my own questions and answers to my Google listing?

No. Posting and answering questions on a Google Business Profile is no longer possible for anyone, including the business owner. Guides that tell you to seed your own Q&A were written before the feature was removed.

What is Ask Maps and is it available in Australia?

Ask Maps is Google's AI replacement for Q&A. It answers customer questions by reading your profile, reviews, photos, and website rather than showing answers people typed in. It launched in the United States and India in March 2026 and has not yet launched in Australia.

Where should I put my FAQ content now that Google Q&A is gone?

On your own website, as a proper FAQ page or worked into your service pages. You control that content, it can be indexed and cited by AI search, and it is one of the sources Ask Maps draws on when it answers questions about your business.

Will my old Q&A answers come back?

No. The content was removed as the feature was retired. If a legacy Q&A block is still visible on your listing, copy anything worth keeping now, because it will disappear as the rollout finishes.

What should a tradie do instead of managing Google Q&A?

Complete every field on your Google Business Profile, keep collecting reviews, and answer your most common customer questions properly on your own website. Those are the three sources Google's AI reads when it decides what to tell a customer about you.
